William Mark Felt
Mr. Deep Throat
Maybe you’ve heard of a certain Richard Nixon? And perhaps a certain Watergate scandal?
And if you’ve really done your homework, a certain anonymous informant named Deep Throat?
Now guess who Felt is.
Yes, William Felt is indeed the great Deep Throat who exposed Nixon in the biggest presidential scandal. And Felt was a Beta.
(For those of you who slept through history class, Watergate was a scandal during Nixon’s presidency in which it was revealed
that Nixon wasn’t quite the straight arrow everyone thought he was. The anonymous source “Deep Throat” revealed many tales of Nixon’s tomfoolery,
including illegal tax auditing, break-ins, illegal wiretapping, and a bunch of other illegal activities. The most famous revelation on Nixon was
when it was disclosed that a group of men associated with the president were arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters.)
So now let’s get a better understanding on the rich historical background of the dark and mysterious man known only as Deep Throat.
*He was born in Idaho, grew up in Idaho, married a girl from Idaho, and, surprisingly, attended the University of Idaho.
*Felt’s first exposure to politics came when he went to D.C. to work in the office of a senator - the senator from Idaho.
*He had a very prestigious career from the start. Working for the Federal Trade Commission, he was assigned to determine whether a brand of
toilet paper named “Red Cross” was leading people to believe it was being endorsed by the American Red Cross – which it wasn’t. Quote directly from Felt,
“My research, which required days of travel and hundreds of interviews, produced two definite conclusions:
1. Most people did use toilet paper.
2. Most people did not appreciate being asked about it.
That was when I started looking for other employment
*In a logical progression, he dropped the toilet paper research and went to work for the FBI. In the FBI, he tracked down enemy spies during WW2.
*Felt made his way up the FBI ranks and landed the #2 position in the whole organization. That means he probably could have assassinated his enemies
and erased any account of them ever existing.
“Hey, have you seen Bob in accounting lately?
“I’m sorry, there is no Bob in accounting. There has never been a Bob in accounting.
Cue dramatic sound effect.
*Being so high up in the FBI, Felt had access to all the information regarding Nixon, Watergate, and the investigation. He proceeded
to pass this information along. But he did it anonymously under the mysterious guise of Deep Throat.
*Felt was actually suspected of being Deep Throat when all of this was going down, but he denied it. And apparently that was evidence
enough for Felt to get off the hook.
*The information Felt supplied on Nixon during Watergate forced the president to resign.
*After Watergate, Felt got in a little scuffle with authority (and the Constitution) when it was revealed that he authorized multiple
FBI agents to break in and search (without warrants) the homes of several people associated with an underground terror network.
*Nixon would actually serve as a key witness in defense of Felt and would contribute lots of money to his defense fund. However,
Felt would ultimately be convicted though.
*President Reagan, however, would pardon Felt. Nixon sent him champagne to celebrate. Again, fate is a cruel mistress.
*Felt revealed that he was in fact Deep Throat in 2005, long after Nixon had passed away.
*Mr. Deep Throat is still alive.
